The Lagos State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr Wale Oluwo, said that 36 communities in Seme in Badagry area of Lagos State would in the next two weeks be connected to the national grid and begin to enjoin electricity supply.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Seme is a border town between Lagos State and the Republic of Benin.
Oluwo said that this was coming after 17 years after the communities had been without electricity.
He spoke at a news conference to mark the second year in office of the Gov. Ambode-led administration on Tuesday in Lagos.
He said the lighting-up of the communities was part of the government’s rural electrification project.
Oluwo said four communities in the riverine areas of the state would also be connected to the national grid soon.
The commissioner also said that work was ongoing to power the street lights in Oshodi, Apapa and Ijora areas of the state.
He said that the state owned oil and gas company; known as Ibile Oil and Gas, would soon be inaugurated, while the state had concluded arrangements to apply for oil blocs from the Federal Government.
According to him, this will enable the Lagos State Government to earn foreign currencies like other oil producing states in the country.
On the proposed embedded power projects, Oluwo said that the state government was intervening in six million aspects in the value chains.
He said that this would include the provision of locally made transformers and meters.
The commissioner also said that arrangements had been concluded to forward a bill to the State Assembly to criminalise vandalism and theft of street lights.
He said that it would become offence for anyone to tamper with the metering system once the state starts the distribution of the embedded power. (NAN).
