A few hours ago, Taraba Election Tribunal declared Senator Aisha Jumai Alhassan‎ as the bona-fide winner of the April 11 Governorship Poll. Immediately after her declaration, Al Hassan went on to become the first female governor in Nigeria. A huge accomplishment for women all over the nation.

Born on 16th of September, 1959 in Jalingo, Taraba state, Mama Taraba as she is popularly called started her political journey when she was 18 years old.

Today she has reached the zenith of her journey and we hope she serves as an inspiration to many women who are sceptical about joining politics.

Here are 7 Things You Didn’t Know About Mama Taraba

Her Maiden Name is Jummai I. Abubakar (Jummai Ibrahim Abubakar).

She joined students’ politics when she was a prelim student at the School of Basic Studies (SBS) A. B. U. Samaru Zaria in July 1977. She won the election and became the Vice President and the only female in the SUG Exco of that year (1978 – 1979).

She married Prof. Ango Abdullahi in September 1979 when he was still the Deputy Vice Chancellor. He became Vice Chancellor in December 1979. She later remarried Engr. M. S. Alhassan in 2007.

She enrolled to read Diploma in Law at ABU Zaria after she had her first baby in 1980. She has 3 children.

She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1986.

She was appointed the first female Attorney General of my State (Taraba) in 1997.

Her father, Alhaji Abubakar Ibrahim OON retired from active politics at the age of 80 years as a State Ex-Officio Member of NEC of Peoples Democratic Party. Her elder brother, Senator A. A. Ibrahim (Jnr) was a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for 8 years (1999 – 2007) representing Taraba Central Zone.
