The Imo State Commissioner for Information, Tourism and Public Utilities, Obinna Nshirim, has during a programme on the state owned radio station said the Igbo community does not listen to radio or read the newspaper.

Obinna Nshirim while speaking on Imo Broadcasting Coporation, IBC, radio station located in Owerri said he “discovered” that “70 percent of Ndigbo do not listen to news,” he further added that “they do not read newspaper.”

The state Commissioner for Information noted that the yuletide season provided an avenue for him to discover this and stated that in comparison, the Hausa were more informed.

He noted that an average Hausa man has a radio beside him which provides him information through news broadcast.

He added: “While others were enjoying their Christmas, I was moving all over the places because it is my duty as information commissioner to know how far I have informed the people, as well as to get feedback from them.”

Adding that his discovery came as a shock to him, Obinna Nshirim continued: “while going round I discovered to my horror, few things, that our people are not informed.

“70 percent of Igbo do not listen to news, they do not read newspaper.

“I keep telling you, we say we are intelligent, we say we are informed but that Hausa boy that cleans your shoe has a radio in his pocket.”
