Godswill Akpabio, governor of Nigeria’s richest state has indicated that he will seek a seat at the upper chamber of the National Assembly in the 2015 elections.
The governor’s regime in Akwa Ibom has seen relative peace and stability in the state although there have been several cases of kidnapping, political executions and hushed up corruption allegations.
Akpabio is one of the South-south governors who positioned himself as an ally of President Jonathan relatively quickly and thus enjoys the support of the Jonathan administration.
He was quoted by a national newspaper at the weekend to have said “my people from Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District have asked me to represent them at the Senate in 2015.”
Speaking at the newly constructed Government Office in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State last Saturday, Akpabio told The Nation’s reporter that “his people asked him not to retire politically but to go ahead to represent them in Abuja.” Akpabio said, “By the grace of God, I will see myself as a Senator in 2015. My people have approached me and told me not to retire politically. They said I should go and become a Senator and I have accepted their request.”
