Another National First: Lagos Set To Acquire Cable Car Mass Urban Transit System

Ropeways Transport Limited (RTL) is set to launch a Lagos Cable Car Transit Project which comprises of the construction of three cable propelled transit lines in Lagos, Nigeria.

This followed the signing of a 30-year Franchise Agreement by Ropeways Transport Limited, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and the Lagos State Government recently.

RTL had already applied to African Development Bank (AfDB) in various currencies towards the cost of the project.

An international construction company, Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH and Roughton International have been appointed as RTL’s technology partner and project manager respectively.

Under the scheme of agreement, Doppelmayr will provide engineering (back-end) maintenance service, it was also learnt.  Findings revealed that the project comprises three transit lines from Apapa to Adeniji-Adele via Oluwole area. Others are Ijore 7up to Adeniji Adele via Iddo and Adeniji-Adele to Victoria Island via Obalende and Falomo. The three lines would have eight transit stations.

Speaking on the development, the Chief Executive Officer of Ropeways Transport Limited, Capt. Dapo Olumide expressed his belief that the Lagos cable car transit system would provide an alternative means of mass transportation in the city and it will help ease the current transportation hassles in Lagos and help restore dignity to commuting because the current situation hampers economic development within the city and negatively impacts the quality of life of its residents.

State commissioner for Transport Kayode Opeifa while confirming details of the project in Lagos said when the project becomes a reality, it will serve as a boost  to the  economy of the state and will enable residents particularly workers to go to work and return home without stress.

The project is expected to be fully completed and commissioned by early 2015.
