President Buhari’s controversial statement which he said in reply to Aisha Buhari’s interview has generated a lot of views on the media.

Aisha Buhari, in an interview with BBC Hausa, said that she will not campaign for her husband in the coming elections if the current situation remained the same, insinuating that her husband’s administer had been hijacked by those who did not understand the administration’s vision.

Buhari when asked his view regarding his wife’s statement then replied with the now famous, “…my wife belongs to the kitchen, living room and the other room.”

The media has since been buzzing with public reaction to Buhari’s reply. While some have said the statement was misinterpreted, others think his reply was demeaning to the feminine gender.

In a bid to redeem his image, both internationally and locally, the President when asked to explain what he meant by his reply to Aisha belonging to his kitchen, told the interviewer,

“I am sure you have a house, you know where your living room and your kitchen is in your house. I believe your wife looks after all of that even if she is working.”

Adding, “It is my wife’s duty to take care of me.”

It should also be noted that the Presidency through the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, had earlier on said that the President was joking about its ‘kitchen statement’.

Garba Shehu, the SSA on Media and Publicity, had said that the President respects the place of women in our society and believes in the abilities of women.
