Censors board applauds Nollywood’s contributions to nation building

Mr Adedayo Thomas, the Director-General (D-G), National Films and Video Censors Board, has applauded the enormous impact of Nollywood in reflecting the true identity and belief of Nigeria on the African continent.

Thomas told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that movies produced by artists under Nollywood have become the best and easiest way to positively portray the significance of Nigeria’s diverse cultures and traditions to the outside the world.

According to him, foreigners who have to visit or work in Africa use films by Nollywood to get integrated into the economy within African communities.

“The significance of Nollywood cannot be overrated; and at that, we need to appreciate the people who ensure that the movie industry is sustained despite all odds.

“I have seen several people who request for Nollywood movies to understudy African cultures when they have opportunities to come around.

“This simply tells you the influence of the industry on the continent and thus we have to celebrate the likes of AMAA who promotes and encourages thespians and practitioners,’’ he said.

He also commended the organisers of AMAA for sustaining the quality and transparency of the awards over the years.

“Osigwe has done remarkably well for celebrating African film makers and thespian for 13 years unending.

“We call on well meaning Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora to give the best of support to ensure we keep the AMAA vision alive and going strong,” he said.

Veteran Nollywood actress and nominee for “Best Actress in Supporting role” category, Taiwo Ajayi-Lycett, also said that AMAA was the best thing that could happen to the movie industry in Nigeria.

“AMAA is the Grammy we know in Africa; with the initiative it brings along that support African movie practitioners.

“Every year, producers and actors up their games because they want to be nominated and if possible win different categories in the AMAA’s awards,’’ she said. (NAN)
