Chelsea Share Points With Southampton

Chelsea were unable to fully capitalise on Manchester City’s defeat to Burnley as they could only draw 1-1 at home with Southampton in the Premier League.

Diego Costa gave the home side the lead in the 11th minute as the Blues hitman rose to meet a pinpoint Branislav Ivanovic cross to beat Fraser Forster.

But just as Chelsea looked to have got over their midweek Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain, Nemanja Matic brought down Sadio Mane in the box to concede a penalty.

Dusan Tadic converted the spot-kick, but only just as Thibaut Courtois almost got saved the strike with his boot.

Chelsea looked nervous throughout, and could not really get Costa involved as much as they’d have liked, while Courtois had to be at his best to keep the visitors at bay on numerous occasions.

Costa hit the post in the second-half after getting his studs on a Willian drilled cross as Jose Mourinho’s men had the better of play after the interval.

Forster made several fine stops late on to deny Oscar and Willian, but Southampton were good value for their point.
