The British High Commission and United States, German, Italian and The Netherlands embassies located around Walter Carrington street, Victoria Island, Lagos have appealed to the Lagos State Police Command to close the Army’s Mammy Market located in the area.
The embassies also appealed to the police to drive away hoodlums attracted by the market.
The embassies hinged their appeal on the security threat posed to them by the market.
They also called for a restriction on the activities of touts operating in the area.
According to The Nation, the embassies made the requests in a joint visit to the State Police Commissioner, Edgal Imohimi in his office in Ikeja, Lagos on Thursday.
The paper further reported that the embassies based their appeal on a recent security breach of the German embassy located in Victoria Island.
In his response, Imohimi reportedly told the embassy officials to ensure that at least three armed policemen were on their premises at all times.
He also revealed that the area in question was a military zone and the police could not do anything without the military’s cooperation.
He also charged the embassies to ensure there is a common ground for printers and photocopiers to be used by visa applicants.
