Spanish football powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid missed facing each other as the Copa del Rey quarterfinal draw was conducted on Friday.

Barcelona will take on Catalan rivals Espanyol for a chance to advance to the semifinal of the competition they won last year, while Real Madrid take on Leganes.

The third force in Spain, Atletico Madrid however landed a tricky encounter with Sevilla, while Valencia trade tackles with Alaves.

The first round of matches will hold between January 16 and 18, and the second round will hold a week later between January 23 and 25.

Barcelona are the record holders in the competition, winning a total of 29 trophies while Athletico Bilbao have 23 trophies and Real Madrid 19.
