Court jails labourer for unlawful possession of Indian hemp

An Upper Area Court 3  in Kasuwan Nama, Jos, on Monday, sentenced a 35-year-old labourer, Isiaku Dan- Asabe to one year imprisonment for unlawful possession of Indian hemp.

The  judge, Yahaya Mohammed, however, gave the accused an option of N5,000 fine.

Dan- Asabe  had pleaded guilty to one-count charge of  unlawful possession of Indian hemp, when the First Information Report (FIR) was read to him.

Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Insp Ibrahim Gukwat, told the court that a team of detectives from Laranto Police Station arrested the accused during a police patrol.

He added that during thee police investigation, Dan- Asabe confessed to have stolen the illicit drugs; and a bag containing 170 wraps of Indian hemp was found in his possession.

Gukwat said that the offence was contrary to Section 319 (A) of the Penal Code. (NAN)
