The National Chairman of Democratic Peoples’ Party (DPP), Mr Garshon Benson, said 120 delegates had been cleared to participate in the party’s national convention on Saturday in Abuja.

Benson told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja that the delegates comprised three from each state of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and 20 national officers.

He said that agenda of the convention included election of national officials who would lead the party to 2019 general election and continue for another two years to complete four-year tenure.

“The convention will also be used to amend some sections of our constitution to bring it up to date and to also set dates for our states chapters’ congresses.’’

The chairman said that the convention was part of the party preparations to capture power in 2019.

“We want to capture power in 2019 for Nigerians to begin to enjoy the real democratic dividends which they did not enjoy in the 16 years of Peoples Democratic Party and the two years of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

“The standard of living is reducing, the life span is reducing, per capita income is reducing and you can mirror it in every facet of life. Even, the general price of staple food is on the increase virtually every day.

“A young man in Nigeria cannot build house because the price of cement is up to N3, 000, galloping from about N1, 400. Look at the price of dollar.

“The DPP believes that this has to change because Nigeria is potentially rich,’’ he said.
