Earthquake panics residents in eastern Indonesia

An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale sent residents having a Ramadan meal in eastern Indonesia scrambling out of their homes early on Wednesday, official said.

Many residents on Halmahera Island and the city of Manado had suhur, a pre-dawn meal before Ramadan fasting, outside their homes

fearing another quake, said Sutopo Nugroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency.
He said there were no reports of damage, officials said.
“Residents felt the quake strongly for about five to 10 seconds,” Sutopo said.

The quake struck at 04:15 a.m. on Tuesday with the epicentre 124 km North-West of Ternate city, at a depth of 58 km, according to the Meteorology, Geophysics and Climatology Agency.
