Ekwunife sues Obiano over alleged double registration

The race over who becomes the next governor of Anambra State became messier on Sunday when the member representing Anaocha Dunukofia Njikoka Federal Constituency, Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, went to court challenging the candidacy of Willie Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Ekwunife, who was the runner-up to Obiano during the gubernatorial primaries of APGA, contended that going by the double registration status of Obiano at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as an electorate, he is not qualified to contest the November 16 gubernatorial election.

It would be recalled that Ekwunife had complained over the conduct of the governorship primaries in APGA, where she alleged that it was flawed with large-scale rigging and manipulation, contending that the lists of delegates for the exercise were changed.

Should Ekwunife succeed in her suit against Obiano, she would become the candidate of APGA and the eventual winner of the election at the end of the day.

The suit was instituted at the Federal High Court in Awka in Suit Number FHC/Awk/CS/281/2013.

Others joined in the suit are the APGA and INEC.

Ekwunife is seeking among other reliefs, that INEC should be compelled to recognise her as the candidate of the party for the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State, based on Obiano’s double registration.

Before now, other individuals had gone to court against Obiano and INEC to prove the eligibility of the APGA candidate for the election.

One of the women from APGA, who spoke with reporters on Sunday, Eunice Okafor, said the law of nemesis had caught up with APGA and Obiano.

Obiano of APGA was alleged to have registered in Lagos and Anambra respectively, which amounts the double registration as stipulated by the Electoral Act.
