The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Thursday said it would build a 500-million standard cubic feet of gas-per-day metering plant to serve the planned capacity expansion of Egbin Power Plant.

A statement in Abuja by Mr Ndu Ughamadu, NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, said the plan would increase Egbin’s installed capacity from 1,320 Megawatts (MW) to 2,670 MW.

The statement reported the Managing Director of the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transmission Company, Mr Babatunde Bakare, as saying that NNPC was committed to improving power supply in the country.

Bakare, who spoke during the tender for the pre-qualification for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction of the project, said the exercise witnessed bid submissions by 36 local and international companies in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s vision for the power sector.

According to the statement, the exercise represents part of NNPC’s strategic moves to increase its footprint in the nation’s power supply mix with a view to expanding the corporation’s stakes in non-core hydrocarbon resources businesses.

NNPC had, earlier in the year, promised to invest to help improve the country’s ailing power sector. (NAN)
