#EndSARS: Anti Robbery Unit Barred From Securing Dignitaries

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has barred the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) from conducting random stop and search and from providing security to Important personnel.

Speaking in a meeting with SARS commanders at the force Headquaters in Abuja on Friday, the IG expressed his worries about the recent protest by Nigerians to end the unit.

According to the IG, the police is taking these measures as a response to the longing of modern policy.

He further added that every the stop and search operation on roads should be done on the approval of their superiors including the commissioner of SARS or Deputy commissioner or Assistant Commissioner of police in charge of their various commands.

The IG also urged them to always operate in their official uniforms in which they can be evidently identified.

As reported in Punch, the IG stated “In demonstration of good faith to the aspiration of the Nigerian populace, I have given a mandate to the IGP’s Monitoring Units and ‘X’ Squad and other oversight units of the Force to monitor the activities of the SARS operatives, while in the same vein, citizens are encouraged to avail the police ways to improve SARS operations across the nation,” he added.”
