EU President Donald Tusk has scheduled meetings with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande, British Prime Minister Theresa May and other leaders ahead of a September summit on the implications of Brexit.
The 28 EU leaders, excluding May, are to meet in Bratislava, Slovakia, on Sept. 16.
The leaders are to discuss the consequences of Britain’s June referendum decision to leave the European Union, as well as the future of the bloc.
Tusk will hold a working dinner with Merkel on Aug. 18, according to a statement from his office.
The other meetings – for which no details were given, include the leaders of Luxembourg, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden, Malta and Spain.
The EU president said on Twitter on Thursday that he planned to “consult all (EU) leaders on possible future reforms” ahead of the Bratislava summit.
EU leaders and officials have insisted that exit negotiations with Britain cannot get under way until London has formally notified its intention to leave, launching a divorce process that lasts at least two years.
May, who took over as British premier in the wake of the Brexit vote, has indicated that she will not trigger the Article 50 of the EU’s treaty until next year, despite demands by Brussels for her to do so sooner.
Some of the toughest negotiations with London in the coming years are expected to focus on the thorny issue of Britain’s relationship with the EU once it leaves the bloc.
