Medical experts have advised the three tiers of governments to strengthen their healthcare system in order to improve service delivery.

The experts gave the advice in Abuja on Monday in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

They fielded questions on the sidelines of a training programme for laboratory scientists in the country.

Mrs Nonye Umahi, a Laboratory Scientist in Enugu, advised the government to discourage Nigerians against the practice of seeking medical care in foreign countries.

Umahi said it was imperative for government to invest heavily in support services like the laboratories with intent to making the public and private sector operators qualify for accreditation.

“There has to be a conscientious effort on the part of government to invest in training and re-training of resource persons in direct and in-direct support services,’’ said the laboratory scientist.

Similarly, Miss Uduak-Obong Bassey in Port Harcourt, another Laboratory Scientist, urged government to train experts and professionals in the healthcare system to boost service delivery.

According to her, laboratory facilities should be provided and kept in optimal operational conditions.

“With the improvement in the quality of our health system, Nigerians will be more confident of the quality of service obtainable as compared to international best practices,’’ she said. (NAN)
