Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans to commence the enforcement of the use of speed limiting device across the country from June 1, this year.
Akwa Ibom State Sector Commander, Mr. Ramalan Yerima, said on Thursday during a-one day sensitisation workshop for fleet operators in Uyo, that the speed limiting device once installed would enhance vehicles life span, reduce fuel consumption apart from reducing road crashes.
The sector commander reminded fleet operators that when drivers use control speed, they will be in control of the vehicle, but when on excessive speed the vehicle will control them thereby leading to road accident.
Yerima revealed that ABC transport had embraced this technology long time ago.
“With effect from June 1, the command will enforce the use of speed limiting device on commercial vehicles to reduce road crashes across the country,” he said.
“Fleet operators are expected to install the speed limiting device in all their vehicles to check drivers’ excessive speed.
“Once the speed limiting devices are installed, excessive speed will be forcefully reduced.”
He disclosed that the device would be produced in conjunction with Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to ensure standard and avoid fake.
According to him, the speed limit for all commercial vehicles on the highways should not exceed 90km per hour while private should be 100km per hour.
On penalty for defaulters, he said the National Headquarters of the commission would assign fines for offenders once it comes into effect.
Yerima appealed to drivers to take driving as a serious business and pay apt attention while driving, adding that the higher the speed the fatality the road crash when it occurs.
He said: “The moment a driver/motorist attention is diverted one split minute, it will lead to a serious crash; it is either you end up killing yourself or killing someone else or damage public property.”
