Nigeria’s Under-17 national team, the Golden Eaglets, beat Botswana 3-0 on Saturday in the first-leg of a two-legged friendly encounter played at the U.J Esuene Stadium in Calabar.

The match was part of the preparations for the African Under-17 Championship which will commence next month in Morocco.

Debutant and former national Under-15 striker Taiwo Awoniyi put Nigeria ahead in the 16th minute, before Ifeanyi Matthew extended the Golden Eaglets lead around the half-hour mark.

Awoniyi headed in a cross from Musa Yahaya to complete his brace and seal the win for the hosts.

Botswana coach, Kagiso Kobedi said both sides gave good account of themselves despite his side going down 0-3 adding that the second game of the two-match fixtures on Monday would be very interesting.

“It was a good game for both side especially for the Nigerians but I assure you my wards will be different on Monday,” he said.
