Aggrieved by the continued invasion of their community by armed hoodlums, numerous old women in Sonde-Apon community of Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State stripped themselves half naked and protested over the weekend.
According to the women of the rural community, the residents were tired of the inaction to prevent the recurrence of attacks, of which they were often the victims, citing three recent attacks by the hoodlums.
The women marched through the community, singing songs charged with emotions and curses on the people they accused of making the community unsafe for its inhabitants.
Fingers were pointed at a certain unnamed land speculator of being the sponsor of the hoodlums in order to take over a substantial part of the community.
The most recent attack was carried out by 20 hoodlums, who invaded the community with machetes and guns in the absence of most of the residents who had gone to work.
“They carted away belongings of residents. Some of the women were raped even though they would not want to talk, because of the shame it will bring,” said one of the residents.
A female community leader said that they had petitioned the Inspector-General of Police after the first attack, but nothing was done about it.
“How long do we continue to live in fear because of people who are fighting to take our land by force?” she asked.
She called upon the governor of the state, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar to come to their aid before they were all wiped out.
