A court in the United Kingdom has sentenced an Islamic studies tutor to 19 years in prison for raping and sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl over a period of five years.
According to statements obtained in court, the sexual assault started in 2010, when the suspect, 31-year-old Mohammed Islam was teaching the Koran to schoolchildren in the East End, Daily Mail reports.
It was heard that the act continued to grow in seriousness until he finally raped the victim, who could not be named because of her age, and got her pregnant in July 2015.
The victim had delayed abortion because she wanted to prove he was the father of the foetus.
The prosecuting counsel told the Snaresbrook Crown Court that, “A profile was obtained that was identical to this defendant. The Crown say he was clearly the father of that foetus.”
He initially said the victim had initiated sex but later backtracked and admitted to rape and sexual activity with a minor.
In her ruling, the presiding judge, Sarah Paneth, said, “I do not accept that a nine-year old child could possibly have instigated any sexual activity with you.
“I do not accept that she could in any sense encourage you.
“You were respected as a religious man teaching young children the Koran and while I fully accept that the community centre had no difficulties with you teaching children, what you did over a long period of time – five years – to this young child demonstrates to me that there is a significant risk of serious harm being caused by you to members of the public, as it is young children in this case, particularly young girls.”
Aside the 19 year jail term for rape, he was also sentenced to five years and two-and-a-half years on four counts of sexually assaulting a child and sexual activity with a child, which will run concurrently.
He was equally mandated to sign a sex offender register.
