Kwara State Government Set To Impose Stiffer Penalties On Kidnappers And Ritualists

Dr Ali Ahmad, the speaker of the Kwara state House of Assembly, on Tuesday said the state is making plans to instil stiffer penalties for cases such as kidnapping and human rituals.

He said this move was necessary in order to reduce the rate at which the crimes are being perpetrated.

Laws on these cases will be reviewed and the government will introduce stiffer punishments on culprits.

Kidnapping and human rituals have been on the increase in several states in the country.

This is causing widespread fear and panic in those states.

A lot of prominent persons in Nigeria have been kidnapped, with the kidnappers demanding huge sums of money before they are released.

But sometimes even after the ransom is paid, the victims still end up being killed.

This has caused the state’s House of Assembly to review the laws, which have been referred to as weak and not severe enough to tackle the security challenges in the state.

Ahmad urged the House Committee on Ethnics, Judiciary and Director of the Legal Department, to look at the current laws and give him a report within a week.

Security agencies in the state were also encouraged to come up with creative ideas and security architecture that can help curb the current situation in the state.

Dr Ali also urged the government to give necessary support to security agencies so as to help tackle the situation.
