The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), in collaboration with the Chinese Government in the fight against fake drugs, has arrested a suspected leader of a drug cloning syndicate in Lagos.

Cloning is a process of imitating, and creating another material with different substances (usually sub-standard) to mimic the “original,” in a process that produces counterfeit drugs.

Speaking with News men today in Lagos, the Director of Enforcement, NAFDAC, Mr Garba Macdonald, disclosed that the suspect was apprehended in his house at Orile-Iganmu, Lagos.

The syndicate was specialised in cloning several fast moving drugs, including locally manufactured anti-malaria drugs and analgesics. He was arrested with such type of drugs worth over N200 million.

Mcdonald added that, the Agency has placed a lot of such kind of suspected criminals under the watch list and will expand its investigation appropriately so that anyone found wanting will be punished according to the country’s drug counterfeiting laws.
