“Leave Amaechi Alone!” – Obasanjo cautions Jonathan

Reprieve may be on the way for the embattled Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi as the meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta on Saturday did not come to an end until Obasanjo demanded an immediately end to the alleged harassment of the governor.

The demand by Obasanjo, said to have been made with a stern face, was one of the conditions said to have been laid down by the former president if Jonathan truly wants an end to his (Obasanjo’s) unenthusiastic posture on his administration.

A source close to the meeting at the former President’s residence informed the Nigeria Politics Online that Obasanjo minced no words in his demand that all moves against Amaechi be stopped forthwith.

Amaechi’s Chief Security Officer, his Aide-de-Camp, a lawmaker loyal to him and Majority Leader, Rivers House of Assembly, Chidi Loyds, have been summoned to Abuja by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, over the mayhem that rocked the House two weeks ago.

Obasanjo was said to have told Jonathan to direct the I-G Abubakar not to display such bias in the investigation of the matter adding that all the parties must be investigated to ensure equity.

The source, which pleaded anonymity, said while Jonathan did not utter a word of refusal while Obasanjo made his demand, the President kept nodding continuously in apparent agreement with the request.

“He did not say anything,” said the source “but kept nodding. I think he got the message that that could be one of the ways to win Obaanjo’s confidence back”

Amaechi is believed to have been paired with the Governor of Jigawa, Sule Lamido, in what appears to be Obasanjo’s preferred choice for the Peoples Democratic Party 2015 presidential ticket.

Amaechi had cried out last week over the deployment of security men he descried as strange who assumed duties as security aides without any knowledge of their identities and where they were posted from.

The Governor had said his life was in danger.
