‘Lekki Suicide Climber’ Allegedly a thief

One of the biggest stories yesterday was that of the man who climbed a pole in Lekki and refused to come down asking for a whooping N5m in the process.

He stood his ground for hours and hours refusing the help of all the well-meaning people who wanted to help him out as well as authorities who tried to cajole him.

This morning according to unconfirmed reports, the Cameroonian man has been identified as a thief who only ended up on the pole as a means of escape from a mob.

According to the Nation, a witness said the Cameroonian said he did not know how he got to Nigeria. He had been caught trying to rob a mall and then ran to the pole to escape.

According to the witness “It is not a suicide attempt. The guy is a thief. He wanted to burgle a mall in the neighborhood but he was caught and chased. He fled and climbed the electric pole for fear of being lynched.
“He didn’t get the close to the cable until Eko Distribution Company was contacted to isolate the area. Even at the hospital, he wanted to run but he was pinned down. He later started begging that he was hungry and needed food. That he has nowhere to go,”

The Lagos State Emergency Management Authority have said that they would investigate the matter and follow it to its conclusion.

Their General Manager Michael Akindele said “Security operatives will conduct proper investigation on the matter. People should be watchful, observe strange faces and other activities around them. Such incidents should also be reported to security agencies”
