Puerto Rico Miss Universe, Kristhielee Caride, Stripped of Crown

Kristhielee Caride, Puerto Rico’s proposed candidate for the Miss World Pageant and current Miss Puerto Rico has been de-crowned for her allegedly ugly attitude.

Caride, who was named Puerto Rico’s Miss Universe 2016 barely four month ago, was stripped of her title Thursday because she was flippant during interviews, said she didn’t love cameras and skipped appearances for doctors’ appointments, officials said.

“Beauty queens are not exempt from having a bad day,” the 24-year-old wrote in a lengthy Facebook post announcing her dethronement. “I allowed my feelings to get in the way of my work.”

The pageant organization’s bad attitude claims stemmed from a Sunday interview with a Puerto Rican newspaper. She told the reporter she didn’t love cameras and dismissed some of the outlet’s questions.

Desiree Lowry, national director of Miss Universe Puerto Rico, was present during that interview.

“I wanted the earth to swallow me,” Lowry said. “You always have to put your best face forward … it’s a given that we are going to be in front of cameras and that we have to answer all types of questions.”

Caride has told officials that she was having a personal problem and promised it wouldn’t happen again – but she never apologized, Lowry said. Caride then cancelled other appearances because she said she had a doctor’s appointment that she refused to reschedule.

The 24-year-old queen said she did not agree with her de-crowning, but that she was turning in her sash with dignity.

Lowry presented Caride’s replacement Brenda Jimenez at a press conference held on Thursday at a restaurant in the capital of San Juan. Brenda Jimenez appeared in a sparkling tiara and a strapless red dress with a somewhat surprised look on her face.

“I still haven’t fully processed the information,” she said.

It is the first time a Puerto Rico Miss Universe contestant has lost her crown before the big event is held. Miss Puerto Rico 1994, Brenda Robles, was dismissed during that year’s Miss Universe contest because she was pregnant.

This comes hot on the heels of the Miss World debacle where Steve Harvey the host crowned the wrong queen. The Modelling world is surely an interesting place at the moment.
