Monaco prince urges Trump to reverse `catastrophic’ climate decision

Monaco’s Prince Albert II on Wednesday urged U.S. President Donald Trump to reverse his decision to leave the Paris climate agreement, for the sake of future generations.

He described Trump’s move as “catastrophic’’ and “disheartening’’ and said his message to the U.S. leader would be to “listen a little more carefully to scientists and to the scientific evidence.’’

“We are not doing this deal just for ourselves for now, but for our future generations, and I think that should resonate in most people’s minds and hearts,’’ Albert told reporters in New York at a briefing for the UN Ocean Conference.

The week-long event focuses on how countries can work together to stem the environmental impact on the world’s oceans.

Albert also spoke of carrying on his family’s “long tradition’’ of ocean research left by his great-great-grandfather Prince Albert I, as he launched Monaco Explorations, a three-year exploratory expedition across some of the world’s most remote oceans. (dpa/NAN)
