Mourinho calls on Drogba to finish his career at Chelsea

Jose Mourinho wants Didier Drogba to finish career at Chelsea after watching him destroy Spurs.

The Chelsea boss re-signed the Ivorian on a one-year deal in the summer. And after seeing the 36-year old score his fifth goal of the season moments after assisting in Eden Hazard’s opener, Mourinho revealed he wants Drogba to stay at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea maintained their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League and Mourinho insisted: “It must be Didier’s decision.

“He came here to stay, I want him to stay, the club want him to stay. It will be his decision when he decides when he must stop as a player.

“The important thing is he will finish his career with Chelsea. It looks, for me, that he’s going to stay doing other things when he finishes his career too.

“He’s remarkable. First of all he’s a team player. After that, he’s one of these with an old-fashioned mentality: not selfish, not vain, a humble guy who plays and fights for the team.

“When he is on the bench and comes on for the last few minutes because the team neds someone to hold the ball or defend set-pieces, he does that with the same enthusiasm and spirit as he does when he starts a game against Tottenham.”

Mourinho insisted he did not even have to think about the suspended Diego Costa as Spurs were swept aside after a bright start – and says he will not miss key midfielder Nemanja Matic when he is banned at Newcastle on Saturday.

The Chelsea boss said: “It’s no problem. We’ll play another one, like Diego Costa. Did you remember Diego Costa tonight? I didn’t.

“We give confidence to the other people. We don’t cry when somebody cannot play.

“We played against a very good Tottenham team. They started better than us and should have scored before us, but after our first goal our team became more stable and confident and we controlled the game.”

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino said: “We started very well, created some chances to score the first goal. But they scored from their first chance, and then a second, and the game changed.

“This was the difference tonight. We’re disappointed with the result because 3-0 is harsh. But we do take some positives from it.

“We were brave but we need to play with commonsense from the back.”
