NDLEA seizes 683kg of illicit drugs in 5 months in Taraba

The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Taraba has said that it seized 683.668 kg illicit drugs between January and May 2016.

The NDLEA Commandant in the state, Mr Ishaku Kwajafa, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jalingo on Sunday.
Kwajafa said the items included 144.012 kg of cannabis and 539.656 kg Psychotropic (Tramadol).

He said the command was working round the clock to ensure that the state was free from social vices, adding that 89 people were being prosecuted in various courts over the substances.
He identified Wukari, Gassol, Bali and Jalingo Local Governments as the major areas that recorded the highest concentration in illicit drugs sales.
According to him, larger consignments of the substances are drugs transported from the Eastern part of the country in a luxury buses to Mubi, Adamawa.
Kwajafa said that the substances were suspected to be consumed by members of the dreaded Boko Haram.

He recalled that some of the substances were intercepted by the command in February, 2016.
The commandant commended the state government for donating a Toyota Hilux van to the agency, this he added, had drastically improve their operations.
Kwajafa urged other stakeholders to enlighten the public, particularly youths on the dangers of engaging in harmful drug business. (NAN)
