Nollywood actors, under the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), on Thursday launched an anti-trafficking campaign to mark this year’s World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that actors from across the country gathered at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja for the opening rally of the two-day campaign.
Mr Agility Onwura, Chairman of the Guild in Abuja, said that the event was in solidarity with the UN, which declared July 30 as World Day against Trafficking in Persons.
“As stakeholders and concerned citizens we have gathered in the nation’s capital to campaign against human trafficking, especially of women and children.
“This is “Project AATIWAC, Actors against Trafficking in Women and Children, initiated to raise our voices against the inhuman act of trafficking.
“We are not just condemning the act but also creating awareness and getting people enlightened not to fall victims,” Onwura said.
NAN reports that part of the activities included a road-walk along major streets of the city with participants singing anti-trafficking songs and displaying banners and placards condemning human trafficking.
Pioneer Nollywood actor, Kenneth Okonkwo led other actors during the road show, which included Tonto Dike, Bruno Iwuoha, Emeka Rolands and Charles Awurum.
The event is scheduled to hold from July 28 to July 29.
In 2013, the UN declared July 30 as World Day against Trafficking in Persons to “raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights”.
