There has been confirmation of an oil spillage at Ejigbo area of Lagos State by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) which said two samples of the leakage had been taken for laboratory test to ascertain the true nature of the spill.
The spill, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, was discovered in a well belonging to one Mr. Adedanji Ogunba.
According to the NNPC Depot Manager in Ejigbo, Dr. Balogun Tola, who visited to the site on Aminatu Ilo street Ejigbo, the corporation had taken adequate measures to detect the exact spot of the leakage.
He however said that the locking up the affected premises by the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps made it impossible for the NNPC to take further samples.
The Depot Manager explained that the landlord of the affected premises came to his office with a team of policemen from Ejigbo Police Station to report the incident.
He said the landlord reported that there were traces of the oil spillage in his well.
Mr. Ogunba, said he first noticed the spillage on Saturday and immediately notified the Police.
Tola said officials of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, on Saturday stormed the affected street of the spillage and arrested a pregnant woman not sparing his household who knew nothing about the incident.
He noted that the arrested persons are said to be mainly occupants of the building where the fuel leak was detected.
However, it is being alleged that the landlord may have dug his borehole to the level of NNPC’s pipelines which run through a section of the Ejigbo community.
NNPC has a major depot at Ejigbo, which serves the South-West zone of the country, including Lagos.
At press time, there was a combined team of regular and mobile policemen, officials of Pipeline Security Patrol (PSC), and NNPC officials at the scene of the spill.
