The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, yesterday announced the arrest of suspects in the murder of former Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr Chinwike Asadu, who was murdered about three months ago at his Amorji-Nike residence in Enugu, Enugu State.
Abubakar made this disclosure in an interactive session with journalists during a working visit to Enugu State and added that the weapons used by the killers in the operation were also recovered by the police.
The IGP said that the confessional statements of the seven persons arrested had given information that is enabling the police to be on the trail of other collaborators in the murder.
He said, “We have arrested seven of those behind the killing of CP Chinwike Asadu. His killing was indeed a sad incident, and that is why when I visited the family after the incident, I made a promise that we shall stop at nothing to get those behind that dastardly act.
“I am glad to tell Nigerians that of those who took part in the killing, seven have been arrested and arraigned before a court.”
He gave the names of the suspects as Ogechukwu Uzoh, Ogechukwu Nnadi, Ugwuoke Obiora, Okwuosa Anthony, Chukwudi Enete, David Elvis Aja and Amobi Nnamchi.
“These are the seven persons charged for murder. Aside from the killing of the CP, they also confessed to killing other innocent souls and several acts of criminality,” the IGP added.
He, however, declined giving further details on the arrest as well as what could have informed the motive.
On the murder of several policemen by the Ombatse militia group in Nasarawa State, the IGP said the matter was still under serious investigation.
“What happened there is condemnable by any reasonable person. After investigation, we will be able to brief the press adequately,” he stated.
Earlier, the police boss, who inaugurated a medical clinic at the Enugu State Police headquarters, had commended the media for their partnership with the police.
He said several of such clinics were due to be inaugurated in the South-East as a mark of the importance the force attached to the welfare and wellbeing of its members.
