RIO 2016: Senate Committee Set To Probe Sports Minister, NOC Over Team Nigeria’s Performance

Following the return of the Nigerian U-23 team who won a bronze medal from the 2016 Olympics competition held in Brazil, the Senate has indicated the possibility of initiating a probe into the performance of the country’s contingent at the event.

Speaking on the competition and the poor performance of the athletes, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Joe Obinna Ogba (PDP, Ebonyi) during an interview with journalists on Thursday in Abuja disclosed that a probe might be initiated to question the impact of the of Minister of Sport, Solomon Dalung and the Nigeria Olympics Committee, NOC.

Speaking further during the interview, Ogba noted that the Nigerian delegates were faced with several setbacks including funding logistics which overall contributed to the poor performance of the nation at the global event.

“My committee intends to invite the NOC to come and brief us on the Olympics. Apart from the late arrival of our athletes’ kits, you can see even our national anthem at the opening ceremony was the wrong one. So, all these, we are going to find out what happened when we resume.”
