South African President Calls Jonathan Over Xenophobic Attacks

President Goodluck Jonathan has engaged in a telephone conversation with President Jacob Zuma of South Africa over the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other foreign nationals in his country.

More than 7 people have been killed in the latest wave of attack on Foreigners in South Africa.

The Nigerian Union in South Africa says more than N84 million has been lost by Nigerians to the xenophobic attacks, as against N21million initially estimated.

There has however been no report of any Nigerian killed in the xenophobic crisis in South Africa.

President Zuma expressed his sadness over xenophobic attacks in South Africa appealing to President Jonathan not to allow the incident affect the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

President Jonathan expressed his support for the efforts of South Africa to arrest the attacks on foreign nationals and to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.

The two Presidents reaffirmed the warm and cordial relationship between South Africa and Nigeria and pledged that the two countries will continue to work together for the good of their citizens, and Africa as a whole.

It will be recalled that President Jonathan had suspended the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Danjuma Sheni, over the unauthorized recall of the Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa.
