Barcelona forward, Lionel Messi, will now pay a fine of  €255,000 for defrauding tax authorities in Spain.

The Argentine was earlier sentenced to 21 months jail term for defrauding Spain of €4.1 million relating to earnings from image rights, between 2007 and 2009.

However,  Spanish public prosecutor has revealed that Lionel Messi can now pay a fine instead of serving the jail term.

Messi had on many occasions denied any wrong doing and in May,  filed an appeal -which was turned down by Spanish Supreme Court.

The player, his father, were last July given the jail term after being found guilty of a three-count charge of tax fraud.
