Toyota Recalls Two Million Cars Over Possible Fire Risk

1 Min Read

Toyota has recalled over 6.7 million vehicles worldwide and 2 million in the United States alone over a problem with the vehicles’ window switch that increases the risk of fire outbreak.

This problem reportedly affects many Toyota cars, trucks and Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs).

According to auto blog Car and Driver, this anomaly is caused by insufficient supply of lubricating grease from the power-window master switch which could allow moisture or debris to enter the unit and cause shortage.

This puts pressure on the switch which may cause it to overheat and melt, thereby increasing the risk of fire in the vehicle.

The problem can be resolved by having technicians apply heat-resistant grease and inspect the switch. If this does not solve the problem, the vehicle’s internal circuit board can be replaced, Car and Driver quoted Toyota as saying.

The fault affects the under-listed models in the US:

  • 2007, 2009 Camry/Camry hybrid
  • 2009–2011 Corolla
  • 2008–2011 Highlander/Highlander hybrid
  • 2009–2011 Matrix
  • 2006–2011 RAV4
  • 2009–2011 Sequoia
  • 2009–2011 Tundra
  • 2006–2010 Yaris
  • 2009–2011 Scion xB
  • 2009–2010 Scion xD

This recall will obviously affect Nigerian car owners who may have imported their vehicles from the United States over the affected years.
