A traditional ruler in the country has placed a ban on marriages costing over N100,000 in the face of the current economic hardship facing the country and its citizens.

The traditional ruler of Otukpa, the headquarters of Ogbadibo LGA of Benue, Chief Sir Sunday Ekele JP made the fresh directive known in the community adding that no traditional wedding in the community will be allowed to hold should the cost exceed the stipulated amount.

The decision made by the traditional ruler comes after several complaints had been lodged by young men of their inability to afford the materials and bride price demanded by the bride’s family thereby stalling their marriage plans.

The young men who noted that such outrageous demands from their bride’s family had discouraged them from marrying daughters from the land were granted their wish on Thursday, July 20th.

The traditional ruler while speaking on a live programme on Joy FM, Otukpo stated that anyone found flouting the latest order will be properly dealt with.

He added: “Money should not prevent anyone from getting married in our community. From now onward, no one should spend more than hundred thousand naira before he gets a wife in our community. We need to encourage the young men so they won’t be scared of going into marriage.”
