The management of the University of Lagos has reacted to the disruption of activities on the university campus by some students who blocked the two gates leading to the school.

Hundreds of students of the school today disrupted proceedings on campus when they blocked the two gates leading to the University campus from vehicular traffic, thereby causing nightmarish traffic gridlock on the Finbarrs road leading to Bariga and University Road connecting Herbert Macaulay and Iwaya axis.

The students were protesting what they described as infestation of bedbugs and mosquitoes in their hostels which they said had prevented them from sleeping or reading in their hostels in peace.

According to a statement on Monday by the Deputy Registrar, Information, Olagoke Oke, the protests were unjustified and unnecessary.

He described the act as the handiwork of students bent on shifting the date of the commencement of the upcoming second semester examinations in the school which is billed to start in two weeks.

“The protest is not in anyway justified. We have found out from University of Lagos Students’ Union (ULSU) and its executive had told us that they were not ones who called the protest.

“We have found ‎out that students who were behind the protest were just looking for a way to shift the forthcoming examination which is billed to commence in two weeks,” he said.

Furthermore, he described the bedbug allegations as untrue and the figment of the students’ imaginations.

“On the allegation of bed-bug infested mattresses. There is no truth in that. The UNILAG management replaces ‎hostel mattresses at the end of every sessions.

“After the exams, this session will close, then students can be rest assured that new mattresses will be made available again,” Oke declared.

This is not the first time students of the school will be protesting this month, as they took to the streets earlier this month to protest the death of a 300-level Accounting student, Oluchi Anekwe, who was electrocuted on campus and died on her way to hospital.
