A school in Madhya Pradesh, owned by a former soldier VP Sharma, has come to the fore due to its special training in which they teach their students to be ambidextrous.

Ambidexterity is the state of being equally adapted in the use of both the left and the right hand. It is reported the only about one percent of people in the world are naturally ambidextrous.

The founder of Veena Vandini School, Mr Sharma said that he was inspired to start training kinds on ambidexterity by India’s first president, Rajendra Prasad who had the same qualities.

He said ;

“I read in a magazine that Dr. Rajendra Prasad India’s first president used to write with both hands. This inspired me to give it a try, Later when I launched my school at my native village, I tried training the students.”

“We began training students from standard I and by the time they reach standard III, they were comfortable writing with both the hands,” Sharma added. “Students of standard VII and VIII can write with speed and accuracy. Further, they can write two scripts simultaneously, one with each hand. Students also know several languages, including Urdu.”

According to Mr Sharma, he believes the skill of ambidexterity aids the ability to learn multiple language.

A typical 45- minute class at Veena Vandini includes 15-minutes devoted to handwriting where students develop the ability to write with both hands.

The students are also encouraged to write same words in different languages at the same time.

VP Sharma who founded the school in 1999 in the remote area of the Singrauli district Madhya Pradesh claims that their dedication to handwriting led South Korean researchers to visit and study the pupils two years ago, to find out more about ambidexterity.

Contrary to the popular belief that ambidexterity increases concentration, scientific studies revealed that children with the skill perform worse in logical reasoning, memory and math, they are also prone to developing mental health issues.
