West African Leaders Converge In Abuja To Discuss Security Matters

West African leaders will meet in Nigeria on Monday (today) to discuss security among other issues at the 46th Ordinary Session of the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) authority of heads of state and government slated for the Nigerian capital Abuja, a statement said here on Sunday.

The statement, signed by Reuben Abati, spokesperson President Jonathan, said the leaders of the West African countries will also deliberate on the current political situation in the sub- region.

Noting the participating heads of state and government would receive a briefing on recent developments in Burkina Faso, the summit would also review the report of the 33rd meeting of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council, the statement said.

“Also on the agenda are the consideration and adoption of the 2014 annual report of the President of the ECOWAS Commission. The report of the 73rd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers will also be considered and adopted,” it added.

Some of the participating heads of state and government had already arrived Abuja on Sunday, ahead of the opening of the summit, the statement said further, noting also on the agenda of the summit is the election of the chairman of the ECOWAS authority of heads of state and government for next year.

President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria and President John Mahama of Ghana, who is the current Chairman of the ECOWAS authority of heads of state and government, would present statements to the one-day summit before it goes into a closed-door session.

Others expected to present statements at the meeting include chairperson of the African Union Commission, Nkosazana Zuma, and the United Nations Secretary General’s special representative for West Africa Mohammed Chambas.

“A communique on the summit’s decisions is expected at the conclusion of their deliberations on Monday,” the statement added.
