The arrest and quizzing of former Senate President David Mark has continued to throw up revelations as to the reason behind his ordeal with the anti-graft body.

It was gathered that the long-time senator and retired military general was quizzed over his involvement in the management of campaign funds sent to Benue state during the build up to the 2015 general election by then President Goodluck Jonathan.

However, a top aide to the politician has accused the EFCC of chasing shadows, The Nation reported.

The unnamed source said the EFCC was looking in the wrong direction because the former Senate President was not on former President Jonathan’s campaign team.

The source said, “EFCC is chasing shadows, all the allegations border on sheer politics because 2019 poll is around the corner.

“They asked Mark to account for campaign cash sent to Benue State when Oga (Mark) was not part of ex-President’s Jonathan’s campaign team.

“In fact, the campaign team in Benue State was coordinated by ex-Governor Gabriel Suswam. The former Senate President was kept in the dark.

“Oga was sidelined during Jonathan’s campaign and there is no way he can account for what he did not know about.”

While it had been suggested that Mark was quizzed for his involvement in sharing of cash to senators, the former Senate President had reportedly demanded that the EFCC operatives produce evidence to back up their claim.

He was reportedly accused of sharing billions of naira earmarked for projects in the National Assembly with a few senators.

Another source told the paper that the EFCC had raised a new team to quiz the former senate president on Monday.

The team is expected to involve officials of the Office of National Security Adviser.

However, David Mark’s camp is expected to issue a press release Saturday to address the cause of his ordeal with the anti-graft body.
