Why INEC Can’t Do Anything About Underage Voting – Senator

The senator representing Kaduna Central senatorial district in the National Assembly, Sen. Shehu Sani has proffered reasons why the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cannot stop the menace of underage voting in the country.

He made this known in a tweet on Thursday morning post on his verified Twitter handle.

Controversy ensued last week after a video materialised online of many kid voters lining up to vote during the local government election in Kano.

Sani said the commission would not be able to tackle the menace as long as local government elections remained under the purview of the State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECOMS).

The outspoken senator called for the abolition of the state electoral commissions.

He said, “There’s nothing INEC can do about kid voters under SIECOMS (State Independent Electoral Commissions) as long as they cannot invalidate or nullify the outcome of the elections.

“SIECOMS simply need to be abolished.”
