The National Chairman of Young Democratic Party (YDP), Mr Ezekiel Nya-etok, has willingly tendered his resignation as National Chairman of the party.

The National Youth Leader of the Party, Mr Bishop Amakiri, disclosed this while addressing newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja.

Amakiri said that the resignation of Nya-etok came as a surprise as the party on Tuesday received the notice of his resignation via the party’s social media platform.

He said “while the party is surprise about the resignation of Nya-etok at this time, we wish him success in his future endeavours.”

The national youth leader of the party added that he had contacted Nya-etok on reason for his resignation and he said it was best known to him.

Amakiri said following the resignation of Nya-etok, the party’s Deputy National Chairman, Mr Yerima Shettima, would take over the leadership of the party.

“What the party’s constitution says is that in case the Chairman of the party resigns, the deputy takes over until a new national convention holds,” Amakiri said.

When contacted, Nya-etok confirmed that he actually expressed his intention to resign through an in-house social media platform of the party.

He said his intention to relinquish his position was not based on any internal crisis as there was no any crisis in the party.

He said the reason was to allow younger members to take over from the level he lifted the party to.

He noted that the decision was to allow a younger candidate that should preferably be below 50 to take over “because I will turn 53 on Nov 1.

“This desire will, however, be subjected to the approval of the NWC family upon which the formal transmission in writing will be done in line with the constitution of the party.

“It is at this point that the public will be duly notified.

“As the National Chairman of the party, it’s my responsibility to uphold the processes and procedures of our great party,” Nya-etok said.

The YDP begun its registration process in December 2013 and completed the submission of its application in April 2014.

The party was registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in March 2015 before the general elections, in obedience to a court order.(NAN)
