Your vagina will become drier if you don’t drink enough water

I know we’ve always been told to drink at least two litres of water a day to keep our bodies healthy and our skin clear, but I did NOT know there was a sex-related reason we should all be downing those glasses of H2O, too.

But according to expert advice, the less water you drink the drier your vagina will become.

Women’s health expert Sherry A. Ross has explained how “a healthy vagina needs the same hygienic attention as any other part of the body, similar to the way we care for our face,” and it’s a revelation to us.

We all know our vaginas are genius organs that self-lubricate, but if you think about it, the liquid required for that lubrication doesn’t come out of nowhere; we need to drink enough water to ensure there’s enough to create adequate lubrication. And failure to do so can lead to dryness, especially given the sensitive nature of the skin we’ve got down there.

“The skin of the vagina is susceptible to dryness if not taken care of properly,” Sherry A. Ross says in an interview with Glamour. And as well as being dehydrated, the expert notes it can also cause itchiness, burning and pain – all of which could lead to a yeast infection, or could make an existing one worse.

Yeast and bacterial infections occur when there is a disruption of the normal pH balance caused by dehydrated skin in and around the inside of the vagina,” Ross explains.

So next time you’re thirsty, go for an extra-large bottle of water. Your vagina will thank you.
