The presidential campaign team of President Goodluck Jonathan was again stoned by irate Taraba youths in Jalingo, the Taraba state capital, during a campaign visit for his re-election bid.
The angry youths also stormed the state secretariat of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) along Barde Way and destroyed part of it.
They were said to have become violent in protest of what they described as “presidential falsehood”.
Some of the youths, believed to be supporters of the PDP, said that former president Olusegun Obasanjo had deceived them years ago to vote for him on the promise that he would develop infrastructure on the Mambilla Plateau and now Jonathan was repeating the same promise.
Jonathan had told a crowd of his supporters during a rally at the Jolly Nyame Stadium in the city that he had awarded a $1.1 billion contract for the construction of Mambilla Dam and that $1 billion was released and the contract was already on ground.
The president also said his government had released N30 billion for the distribution of the electricity that would be generated from the yet to be completed Kashimbilla Dam.
He added that plans were on the way for the construction of a presidential resort on the Mambilla Plateau where African presidents will visit on holidays.
A former chairman of the PDP in Taraba state, Alhaji Abdulmumini Vaki, in reaction to the president’s comments, said that the president was an unrepentant liar as, according to him, the Mambilla Dam is situated in his community and no contractor had visited the place.
