Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal has warned fellow politicians against resorting to violence and use of political thugs ahead of the 2019 general election.

The former presidential aspirant made this known at a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders meeting in Sokoto on Thursday.

Tambuwal urged politicians to imbibe the fear of God and shun the promotion of violence as an instrument of political control.

He said his administration had sought to tackle the use of youths as political thugs in the state by supporting educational development and engaging youths in various empowerment initiatives.

According to him, those measures have worked so far as Sokoto has remained peaceful.

However, Tambuwal said that as the 2019 general elections draw nearer his administration would require the support of parents, community leaders and others for the sustenance of peace.

The governor reminded politicians and other citizens that no development could take place where there is no peace, and vowed to tackle any threats to peace in the state ahead of the election.

Also, he commended the conduct of the PDP presidential primaries held in Port Harcourt, describing it as peaceful.

Tambuwal, who secured 693 votes, was defeated by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Tambuwal said he had congratulated the winner and urged other politicians to prioritise national interest and people’s welfare over personal glory.
