The National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS) has urged young Nigerians to be active in political processes by identifying with parties of their choice at the grassroots.

Mr Akinola Shasanya, the President of NULASS, said on Monday in Lagos that youths must be part of the decision-making processes in the country.

Shasanya is a 25-year-old student who was elected as one of the five APC ad hoc delegates from Ward D of Orile Agege to vote in the party’s primaries ahead of 2023 elections.

He said that his involvement in grassroots politics had given him the opportunity to be part of the decision-making on who would be standard-bearers of APC in 2023 elections.

“It is clear that most young people do not engage in grassroots politics. Most party faithful are the elders in the grassroots.

“This not good at all. We cannot leave it for the elders alone if our situation must change. 2023 general elections are around the corner, students and all youths must get involved at the grassroots.

“I’m not the youngest party faithful but I’m the youngest of all ad hoc delegate across the federation.

“Youths, let us begin to prove that we are leaders of tomorrow by coming out, be part and parcel of political activities and process from the grassroots and, most importantly, to comport ourselves well.

“As the youngest delegate among the five elected, I feel good and recognised. It is good that the party is having the interest of young people at heart,” he said.

He noted that the APC special congress held on May 18 at Ward D, Orile Agege, was devoid of abnormalities or security threats.

“Youths can only have an enabling environment to play active and vital role in their own development and that of their community when they make themselves available,” he added.

The NULASS National President advised youths of 18 years and above to get registered and have their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) ahead of the 2023 polls because “it is most important”.

Shasanya, a member of the Lagos State Youth Parliament, is also a strong advocate of quality youth involvement in grassroots politics.(NAN)
