National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has declared that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is too important to be controlled by opposition parties as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
Ganduje made the statement on Thursday during a rally in Abuja to welcome new defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and other opposition platforms into the ruling APC. The event, held at the old parade ground in Abuja, was led by the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu.
Speaking at the gathering, Ganduje emphasized the symbolic and political significance of the FCT, describing it as the seat of power and the unifying hub of the nation. He said its control should reflect the party leading the federal government, especially under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
“The Federal Capital Territory is the heart of Nigeria, and it should not be left in the hands of opposition parties,” Ganduje stated. “Today’s defections confirm that residents of the FCT are pleased with the APC and are ready to support President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.”

He noted that the mass defection to the APC was a testament to the party’s performance and increasing acceptance among the electorate, both in Abuja and across the country. He also praised President Tinubu for appointing FCT indigenes to key positions in his cabinet, a move he said demonstrated the government’s commitment to inclusion and equity.
The rally, themed “Abuja Unity Rally,” also featured the Minister of Special Duties, Zephaniah Jisalo, an indigene of the FCT, who commended President Tinubu for fulfilling campaign promises to uplift local communities. He said the administration was working to ensure that the benefits of governance reach grassroots residents.
Minister of State for the FCT, Hajia Mariya Bunkure, echoed similar sentiments, urging the FCT electorate to continue supporting the APC, which she said was “leaving no stone unturned” in its efforts to improve their welfare.
High-ranking officials in attendance included Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, FCT Area Council Chairmen, councillors, and other party stalwarts from across the country.
