2027: Matawalle, Yari Supporters Dismiss Opposition Coalition, Declare Tinubu Best Bet for North-West

Supporters of former Zamfara State Governors Bello Matawalle and Abdulazeez Yari have dismissed the recent coalition of opposition political figures as “a waste of time,” declaring President Bola Tinubu as the most viable candidate for the North-West in the 2027 presidential election.
Operating under the banner of the Shehi and Matawalle Project for Tinubu 2027 Mandate, the group described the emerging alliance—reportedly involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai—as “a gathering doomed to fail.”
Speaking during the inauguration of the group’s zonal and state executives in Kaduna on Saturday, the Publicity Secretary, Auwal Mohammed, stated that the coalition lacked ideological direction and was only fueled by desperation to unseat President Tinubu.
“That coalition is nothing but a jamboree. It cannot stand the test of time,” Mohammed said while addressing the press. “President Bola Tinubu has shown leadership, courage, and vision. Under the Renewed Hope agenda, the economic policies being implemented are repositioning Nigeria.”
The group’s Zonal Coordinator, Babangida Damba, backed the sentiment, saying Tinubu deserves a second term due to the “bold economic reforms and social investments” made so far. He cited the removal of fuel subsidies, the unification of the exchange rate, rural electrification, and road infrastructure as clear signs of a government committed to structural transformation.
“The removal of fuel subsidy, though painful at first, is already yielding long-term benefits,” Damba said. “Government revenue has improved, and funds are being channeled into infrastructure and human capital development.”
He urged the newly inaugurated zonal executives to intensify grassroots mobilisation and public enlightenment ahead of the 2027 elections. “Your role is simple – mobilise, educate, and sustain the movement for the return of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027,” he stated.
Also speaking, the Zonal Secretary, Dr Ahmad Hashim, described the project as more than just a political campaign.
“This is not just another campaign group. It is a strategic political movement designed to ensure continuity and consolidation of President Tinubu’s leadership,” Hashim explained.
He noted that the project’s strength lies in its deep roots in the North-West, driven by political heavyweights like Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle and former Governor Abdulazeez Yari.
“These two leaders are political pillars in the region. Their commitment to national unity, governance, and economic development is well documented,” Hashim said. “Their support for President Tinubu is not transactional; it is rooted in shared values and a vision for a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria.”
With the 2027 elections still two years away, the political landscape is already heating up, as both ruling and opposition parties begin to position themselves for the next contest for Aso Rock.
